How can schools help students discover careers connected to the ocean and take an active interest in marine conservation? The BLUE OCEAN School Guidelines bring together educational approaches, school strategies and guidance to support this work. Developed through contributions from partners in French Polynesia, Italy, Greece and Malta, these materials explore how schools can strengthen ocean literacy and promote blue careers, with particular attention to island and remote communities.
What will you find in the materials?
The guidelines contain six chapters covering complementary aspects of blue education:
- Existing practices and SWOT analyses: explore strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in school projects, teacher training and the promotion of blue careers.
- EU-Pacific cooperation: discover approaches to building a Blue Education Area that connects remote and island schools.
- Career guidance: examine how school strategies and career counselling can encourage interest in ocean-related professions.
- School leadership: explore ways school directors can support ocean conservation, blue careers and environmentally responsible behaviour.
- Educational events: find guidance on organising school activities that introduce students to marine careers and ocean preservation.
- School readiness: use an indicator checklist to examine the conditions needed to establish a Blue Education Area.
Who are the guidelines for?
The materials are intended for teachers, school directors, career guidance professionals and education stakeholders interested in bringing ocean-related learning into school life. They address both classroom activities and wider school planning, connecting environmental education with students’ future study and career choices.
